Homemade Glazed Sugar Cookies
My mom is famous for her tasty sugar cookies, so I wanted to tell you about the time we made, packaged, and sold this colorful set! Her sugar cookies are not the fancy decorated ones you see with buttercream, fondant, or royal icing. It’s just a simple sugar cookie with a glaze made from confectionary sugar and water, and they are sooooooo good! Now let’s get into the specifics!
To start, you’ll need a basic sugar cookie dough recipe:
- Cream together a ½ Cup Butter and 1 Cup of Granulated Sugar
- Blend in 1 Egg and ½ Teaspoon of Vanilla
- Mix together in a separate bowl 2 ¼ Cups of Flour, 2 Teaspoons of Baking Powder and a ½ teaspoon of Salt
- Sift Dry Mixture into the Butter Mixture
- Mix Well and split into 2 balls
- Roll out with Rolling pin and use cookie cutters to cut out shapes
- Bake at 350 on an ungreased baking sheet on parchment paper for 8 to 10 minutes
Make sure to roll out the dough on a floured surface and use a round cookie cutter to create six round cookies. These will be the base for our rainbow of colors
But wait, we’re not done yet. To add a whimsical touch to our rainbow cookies, let’s make a cloud-shaped cookie. Simply roll out the remaining dough and use a cloud-shaped cookie cutter to create a fluffy, white cloud.
Next, it’s time to make the glaze. Mix together confectionery sugar and water until a smooth, glossy consistency is achieved. It shouldn’t be too thick where you can’t brush it on but too thin where it drips off. Divide the glaze into six bowls and add a different color of food dye to each bowl. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple – the colors of the rainbow. The glaze should be brushed on when the cookies are still hot!!!
My favorite food coloring is from AmeriColor- The colors come out by “drops” so no toothpicks needed! The colors always come out so vibrant!
When all the cookies were lined up it looked like those little sugar dot candies that came on the white paper strip!
Once the cookies have dried, carefully box them up as a gift for a friend or loved one. When we were selling the cookies, we got these rainbow boxes off Amazon, but I can no longer find them ☹ These homemade sugar cookies are sure to brighten anyone’s day with their rainbow of colors and sweet, sugary taste.
So why not whip up a batch of these colorful creations and spread some sweetness to those around you? Homemade sugar cookies with glazed frosting are a delightful treat that is as fun to make as it is to eat. Enjoy!
